FAQ

Do I have to be sick to benefit from an acupuncture treatment?

No you do not. Many patients come in for "maintenance" treatments. Acupuncture is a great preventative measure to keep patients healthy throughout the year.

Why would I see an acupuncturist?

Many patients begin acupuncture treatments to find relief from a wide variety of ailments**. Patients who are not experiencing any conditions also seek treatment to maximize their health and maintain wellness.

How deep are the needles inserted?

Acupuncture points are located on or close to the skin surface, so needles are generally inserted anywhere from an 1/8th of an inch to an inch.  The depth of insertion depends on the nature of the condition being treated, the patient's size, age and consititution, as well as the acupuncturist's style and training.

What does acupuncture feel like?

The sensations that patients feel can range from nothing to a heavy sensation, ache around the point. Some patients are more sensitive than others, but for the most part most patients describe the feeling as fleeting and the overall treatment as relaxing.

Are the needles sterile?

Yes, sterile, inividually packaged disposable needles are used. They are used once and then disposed of properly after the treatment session.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the severity and duration of the condition, as well as the strength and constitution of the patient. Acupuncture has a cumulitive effect. Once symptoms improve and overall harmony and balance have been achieved, treatments are reduced.

When can I expect results?

This depends on both your overall state of health and the nature of the condition for which you are seeking treatment. Acute conditions could be resolved with as few as two or three treatments, while chronic conditions often respond best to a longer period of treatment, perhaps 5-10 treatments.

How will I feel after a treatment?

Most patients feel  relaxed and rejuvenated after a treatment session. There are patients, however that feel drowsy.

What should I do before/after a treatment?

Please do not eat a big meal right before treatment. A small meal or snack a couple of hours before a treatment is ideal. Avoid rigorous exercise directly before or after treatment. Quiet or relaxing activities as well as mild exercise or walking can further enhance the effects of the treatment. Please avoid stress, alcohol and caffeine before and after treatment.
